The
American Recovery and Reinvestment Tax Act of 2009
Installing Energy Efficient Windows and
Doors
"On February 17, President Obama signed into law the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Tax Act of 2009. This bill extends and
modifies the tax credits for windows, doors and skylights
established in the Energy Policy Act of 2005."
(Consult with a tax professional with specific questions.)
To Qualify, the windows
- Must be placed in service after February 17, 2009 and must have
a U-Factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) less than or
equal to .30 (Okna's U-Factor is .25 and SHGC is
.27)
- Qualifiying products purchased between February 17, 2009 and
December 31, 2010 are eligible for a tax credit equal to 30 percent
of the product cost. The maximum amount of homeowner credit for all
improvements combined is $1500 during 2009 and 2010.
- For products purchased between January 1, 2009 and February 16,
2009, the terms of the tax credit are less clear. The IRS will
clarify these terms in guidance documents, which are expected to be
released later this year.

"Considering the rising costs for heating and cooling and the
advances in window technology that allow lowering these costs, it
does not take long for a retrofit to pay itself off. Replacing old
windows and doors with ENERGY STAR windows and doors can save
home-owners hundreds of dollars in heating and cooling costs each
year. And now the tax credit offers you the chance to save money
even before the energy-cost-savings kick in. More efficient windows
and doors also help to protect the environment and conserve limited
resources."
The tax credit can be claimed on the federal income tax form at the
end of the year. You should keep the ENERGY STAR certification with
your records for any window, storm door or entry door you purchase.
You are not required to attach it to your tax form, however.
Please ask us for a customized receipt if you intend to apply for
this deduction.
